Yesterday, The Case Foundation and Parade Magazine announced two Giving Challenges that will take place over the next several weeks on three micro-philanthropy platforms: SixDegrees, Facebook Causes, and Global Giving.
The extensive media coverage of this $500,000 contest marks another milestone for micro-philanthropy. In June, the Wall Street Journal ran an article about micro-philanthropy platforms. In August, Oprah interviewed Kiva founders Matt and Jessica Flanerry during her daytime talk show. In October, CNN reported on Robin Maxwell's Six Degrees charity badge. Now the New York Times and The Washington Post are covering The Case Foundation's Giving Challenges.
These are exciting developments for someone who has been following micro-philanthropy for the last 18 months. In the summer of 2006 -- when I started looking into micro-philanthropy -- very few if any mainstream articles had been published on the subject.

America's Giving Challenge
Parade magazine is partnering with the Case Foundation, Network for Good, Global Giving and select nonprofit partners to launch America’s Giving Challenge. The America’s Giving Challenge begins at 3 p.m. EST on December 13, 2007 and will end at 3 p.m. EST on January 31, 2008.
Presented by Parade, The America’s Giving Challenge will award a total of $500,000 across two categories, to the charities inspiring the most people to “take the challenge” and fundraise for or donate to a cause or charity they care about.
Individuals visit the Parade Website and choose how they would like to participate. Participants can choose to “Champion a Cause” or “Give to a Cause.”
Participants will receive easy-to-follow instructions on how to build, customize and distribute their own charity badge to raise funds and spread the word for their cause. Network for Good and Global Giving will process all donations.
Causes Giving Challenge
Causes on Facebook is partnering with the Case Foundation to launch the Causes Giving Challenge on Facebook. The Causes Giving Challenge begins at 3 p.m. EST on December 13, 2007 and will end at 3 p.m. EST on January 31, 2008.
The objective of the Giving Challenge is to introduce people to new ways of giving online and connecting with others through the causes they care about most.
A total of $250,000 will be given to the nonprofit beneficiaries of those causes who receive the most unique donations.
The breakdown of the awards is as follows:
In addition, the Causes Giving Challenge will award $1,000 per day (up to a total of $50,000) to the Cause with the most unique donations in a 24-hour period (midnight to midnight). To qualify, a Cause must have a minimum of ten donors that day. If there is a tie, the $1,000 will be split amongst the qualifying charities.
The Giving Challenge is not focused on how much money you can raise, but on how successful you are at building collective action to make a lasting impact. To succeed, the goal is to get as many unique donations to your charity as possible.
