Busting the Myths Behind Social Apps and an introduction to the Bean
Social apps on Facebook that claim to donate real money to charities?
Yes, there are many. My current passion is weeding through them, finding the good and bad and promoting them. I started as a group on Facebook on August 13th /2008. Originally meant as a space to connect with friends who used these apps. People started asking which ones I knew of that donated. I knew a few and used 3 a day at that point.
Well the research began and what did I discover? One app alone donated over $54,000 to The Nature Conservancy. http://nature.org.
Well then I went insane with the possibilities! My passion meter exploded and ideas started flying in. The group evolved to become a social and information group. Now my passion has forced me to buy a virtual private server and domain. Where I can easily review good and bad apps, as well as bring notice to the apps that don't use Facebook and help. It opened Sunday September 7/2008. Being as how I know nothing of Joomla yet... it is small and growing daily as I learn. Took me a full day to get the forum up ;)
Why do I do this? I figured it all out yesterday while sitting in a community garden. Because I can, if I can reach one person to go to http://www.care2.com/click2donate and click each tab and button once a day to help 10 great causes, it takes less than 2 minutes. It is one more person helping. Each and every person adds up. We can turn a trickle into a waterfall. Every person truly does make a difference.
I fully encourage real life work as well. I am trying to organize a Greenday clean the park worldwide outing, or at least in as many cities as members are willing to help setup and volunteer with. Want to plan for April so I can try to get people to sponsor and make donations for different charities. As well as find some officers to help me out with getting people to donate to charities in there cities. Say for example get Starbucks to donate .50 for every person who shows up to help. They can donate it directly to any local charity in there name. Thereby causing real world difference in 2 ways. I have other things planned and going on.
So this is what I do in my spare time :)

Love the 'passion meter exploding' metaphor -- that's what this is all about! Hope you'll post those Greenday park events here as they're put together and we'll all do what we can to spread the word.
