About me:
My name is Jennifer. I work full-time as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. For the past 17 years, I have worked with people with disabilities, primarily people diagnosed with severe mental illness. My job focuses devising a plan and coordinating services to help people with disabilities obtain the skills, level of training, and job accommodation necessary for them to obtain and maintain employment.

I am very interested in leadership, leadership development, team-building, and change-management. I am also very interested in international development issues focused on enhancing the independence and rights of people with disabilities. I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology/Criminal Justice and a Master's Degree in Rehabiltiation Counseling.

Almost 3 years ago, I began looking for a way to contribute to the world around me and share my knowledge/skills with those who could benefit. Through the United Nations Online volunteering website, I was introduced to Grace Association Pakistan. I worked with them to develop two proposals focused on establishment of a Disability Resource Center and an Employability Skills Center for people with disabilities. Our volunteer team was honored by the United Nations in 2009.

Through my experience with the United Nations Online Volunteering site, I also became affiliated with Nabuur (www.Nabuur.com). I have been working as an online project manager with them for over 2 years and was honored by the Nabuur community in 2008 as their volunteer of the year. Presently, I manage a group which provides resources to projects for addressing the needs of people with disabilities. I facilitate a team of online volunteers for Arrow Web Hospital, located in the Kayole-Soweto slum area outside of Nairobi, Kenya, and a project called Atulibabisi, focused on a school for 22 children with disabilities in Ghana, and two projects in Cameroon. Wherever I can, I work to build relationships and forge partnerships among people to leverage resources for the good of all.

Arrow Web Hospital - Looking back at 2009 and forward to 2010!

As the year draws to a close, we wanted to take some time to reflect back on all that has happened and express our extreme gratitude to all those involved. Each year since its inception, our hospital has continued to grow and develop. 2009 was no exception. Without question, your ongoing support and encouragement has helped us get where we are today. While our hospital still has many needs, we are grateful for what we have, and we are incredibly blessed that we have been able to impact our commu… Continue

Hi Jennifer ~ was looking at notes from your talk with the Social Actions team today, and realized you're in Ohio -- so close! I live about a half hour north of Ann Arbor MI. If you're ever in this area please let me know -- would be great to meet you in person -- and I'll be sure to do the same (get to Cleveland at least once a year). Take care :)

p.s. Seeing below that Beth Pickard of Firstgiving left a comment for you, too, earlier this year. Hope to here the two of you have been able to connect.

Hi Jennifer!

Thanks for your message; I took a look at your profile page and blog. It sounds like we have some similar interests--kudos for the work you are doing in contributing to leadership development and sustainable economic growth.

I work for Firstgiving.com, an online fundraising company that helps people raise money online for registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations. I post regular updates for fundraisers, donors and non-profit organizations at the Online Fundraising Blog and for athlete fundraisers at the Team Firstgiving Blog.

I'd be interested to hear more about how you got started volunteering with Nabuur and what your experience has been like. Drop me a line when you have a chance!
