Thanks for your comment Nelson. It's so important we all do what we can to speak out against human rights abuses. You can follow the day by marking it in some way each year on December 10.

I couldn't agree any more. I come from El Salvador and during its civil war the government committed many human rights violations. My parents and other people in the country did not have the opportunity to speak up about what was happening. This is…

Very interesting topic to explore and how to consider some of the "sticking" points on greater collaboration. Sounds like it was quite an interesting event. Australian social changers on the Interwebs are also exploring these kinds of things, yet no…

I agree with your belief that the Internet can connect like-minded people, no mater where they are in the world. It can also connect them with ideas that anyone can use, and with other people and resources, that might not be known to them. I think o…

Alex, thanks for the introduction to Voice Thread -- http://www.voicethread.com -- hadn't heard of them before. I'm always curious about the various ways "collaboration" is used. For me, it's more than coming together around a common goal or issue,…

Reading the heading of this post you might be wondering what is "Project TOTO". Well I'm glad you asked; very glad. "Project TOTO" (The Overseas Training Operation) is the brain child of ActionAid Australia and I'm particularly excited about this p…

About me:
I consider myself to be a rather straight forward kind of person. I mostly spend my time involved in politics whether at a local, state, national or international level. There are many things that can be done in the world and all of it relies on the politic at the time. I do have other hobbies than just politics.

By day I work as the ACTU Web Campaigns Officer. I prefer full time cyber warrior but whatever. And by night I work as an individual online activist and amateur blogger.

I do enjoy visiting museums and galleries with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image usually a great place to visit. If you haven’t seen Victoria’s Parliament House then you should get down there and watch from the public galleries and/or take the tour. It’s an impressive old building with much history associated with it. Although I do make an effort to try to check out the Parliament Houses around Australia. Queensland’s Parliament House is also quite impressive with the old Legislative Council chambers being used primarily for ceremonial events, special occasions and for hosting dignatories etc.

"Tell My Politician" Application

This is an interesting looking application for the hardcore political hacks, wonks, nerds and activists that want to add an extra cool tool to their website or blog. But you can use it even if you don’t have a blog or website. You can use the bookmarklet on any page to contact politicians.

The application lets people contact their politicians by using their address. Users can choose to contact politicians by email, phone, snail mail or through Twitter.

It’s definitely worth checking it out and… Continue

Human Rights Day 2009

December 10 marks Human Rights Day.

Human Rights Day marks the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted on December 10, 1948 that set down the basic principles at the very heart of the human rights movement. The UDHR has enabled remarkable progress in human rights, inspiring international human rights standards, laws and institutions that have improved the lives of many around the world. The day is a high point in the calendar of United Nations and is normally mar… Continue

Social media and activism

Social media and activism present a rich combination for positive progressive change, if utilized properly and effectively; with a plan and strategy underpinning its use. In many ways there are similarities to the techniques and strategies used for on-the-ground organising and campaigning.

Given my work is all about campaigning online, and people have been approaching me about strategies and techniques, I’ve decided to publish my thoughts on a range of topics about social media and online activ… Continue

Safer climate; safer future

Like thousands of others across the world I’m participating in Blog Action Day 2009. Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. The aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion. This year’s topic is climate change. Being involved in environmental issues, I’ve joined in to voice my concerns about climate change. Put more accurately my concerns about in… Continue

Collaboration in 21st Century

There are many reasons for why I am a particularly ferocious advocate for the Internet and its uptake. Regular readers of my blog will be familiar with many of these reasons (ability to organise, communicate and take action), but one of the major reasons for my “love” of the Internet is the capacity to collaborate. In the more than 15 years I’ve been using the Internet, there have been a remarkable number of collaborative efforts for positive progressive social change.

The capacity for the Inte… Continue
